May is mental health awareness month and what I would like to do is share one women’s perspective (mine) and how I have been effected by this. First of all, I am not a doctor nor do I claim or want to be, but boy does mental health issues run deep in my family. Mostly covered up or masked by drug and or alcohol abuse.
From the outside, my family upbringing was much like everyone else’s but behind those exterior walls is where it felt different. At a very early age, I distinctly remember the heaviness in our home. No one ever appeared to be happy and if they were, it was only for the appearance of others. Much later, when I was in my thirties, I learned both of my parents suffered from depression, and each one dealt with it in entirely different ways.
Which brings me to my first point; we as a society have a tendency to act as if everything is fine, even though it’s not. We even answer “fine” when asked, how we are doing. We have to start being honest with ourselves, its ok not to be fine.
Don’t worry about what the other person wants you to say. When we start speaking out loud about how we truly feel inside things will begin to change. For me, it meant no more pretending. The jig was up. So please let your friends, family, or anyone you feel comfortable with, know when you are not fine or if you need help.
