We are a week away from National Vulva Awareness Day. On April 21st, celebrate the images of the Vulva! Vulvas are unique for every female individual—in shape, size, color, smell, taste, and landscape. They are the star of the show, the first thing you see when you view the vagina.

However, no matter how much sexual positivity is preached about the uniqueness of these beauties, most of the female population still finds it taboo to appreciate or view the vulva in a gorgeous light. Why can that be? Well, one crucial reason is that women don’t take the time to see what their vulva actually looks like. If we are able to see visuals of how special and individual all vulvas are, we can slowly learn to accept and admire our bodies.

To celebrate our love of vulvas and their uniqueness, here are five amazing photographers who have captured the essence and beauty of the female body in various ways, including the vulva.

Vulva

An Iranian American photographer does comparisons in her world. She flips the script by using the skin and shapes of the natural world in her photographic work. For example, she can compare rolls or stretchmarks to trees or desert dunes. She has collaborated with The New York Times, Paper Magazine, The New Yorker, and T Magazine. Her themes of inspiration tie into the plurality of the human form, meaning all types of visual comparisons and representations of the body.

Vulva

This Spanish-born photographer focuses on intimate moments with her models and for her own self-portraits. She captures the ‘everyday’ scenes in her work, a sense of comfort, vulnerability, and normalcy. With over ten years of perfecting her craft, her photography series DIARIS 2009-2019 showcases her personal projects and can be bought on Amazon.

Vuvla

London-born, she specializes in honest portraiture photography. Her sheer focus is on the daily lives of her models. She uses the atmosphere and cinematic lighting to capture the personal and up close of the female body and all other models she works with. Her photographs would be considered documentary style, it’s almost as if you are in the room yourself. She has collaborated with IDLES, Dior, Cosmopolitan, and Rolling Stone. Her photographs carry the tone and weight of the male gaze, sharing stories her model subjects want to convey.

Vulva

She is a photographer from Surrey who has taken the body and created a visual documentation of all the unique physiques of the intimates. She has two books in her Bare Reality series called Bare Reality: 100 Women, Their Breasts, Their Stories (2015), Manhood: The Bare Reality (2017). Now she has a new photography project which has to deal with 100 vaginas. Her goal with this was to reclaim womanhood and listen to every woman’s story and relationship with their vulva and vagina, the new book Womanhood: The Bare Reality. This recent opportunity has made her address her own experiences, such as bad sex, birth, and shame.

Female Body

She lives in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, and began her photographic projects through her own teenage experiences where she has felt self-conscious about her vulva size. She was considering labiaplasty, a surgery to reduce the labia minora size. However, she visited the doctor who told her to explore the topic. This led to her loving her genitals and she wanted to spread the same love and acceptance.

Her website and Instagram showcase some of her work such as the “Flip Through My Flaps” and “Browse Through My Boobs” collections. She is very honest about women’s anatomy and experiences. You can book personal and group shots, body positivity apparel, and merchandise, including sex toys and more forms of photo shoots.

Vulvas and the female body are a sight to behold when captured by professionals who want to express their unique physiques. This is an empowering list of women who are changing the way we see female bodies and to learn self-love. If you are an aspiring photographer and want to showcase the beauty of the body and all its parts, then definitely take a step in this direction of artistic work.
