We all know the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. But how often do we make the effort to practice healthy habits? Not only do exercise and mindfulness help you maintain your physical health, but they are also good for your mental health. Nevertheless, countless people still fail to be proactive about their health. From broken New Year’s resolutions to unused gym memberships, folks have become downright apathetic.

One product that can help change the health and wellness game is the smartwatch. Though these accessories have been around for quite a while, I didn’t see the value in them until I decided to purchase my own. With its numerous personalized features, a smartwatch can make taking charge of your health fun, easy, and automatic.

How does a smartwatch work?

Smartwatches are equipped with Bluetooth capabilities so you can pair them with your phone. Simply download the app that is compatible with your model of watch (you can find the app name listed in the activation directions). Once you’ve downloaded the app, you’ll enter information into your profile such as your:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Weight
  • Profile picture or avatar.

From there, you’ll save it and pair your smartwatch with your phone. Once paired, your phone’s app will record the data collected by your watch. You can also view all your stored details in the phone app. This comes in handy if you want to see your trends for the week or check your progress in an area that you’d like to improve.

If you wear your watch and can’t find your phone, don’t worry. You can answer phone calls with your watch too. While this feature used to be available only to Apple iPhone and Watch customers, this technology is now available to anyone with a smartphone.

What features are included in a smartwatch?

There are numerous smartwatch options on the market. The features that are included will vary depending on the smartwatch model you purchase. Most smartwatches today are equipped with call and text answering features as well as exercise tracking.

My watch includes but is not limited to those and a few of my other favorites:

  • Heart rate monitoring: The heart rate beats per minute, (bpm), display will keep you posted– whether you’re feeling relaxed or incredibly stressed. Your beats per minute number will be displayed clearly along with a chart showing how it fluctuated throughout the day.

  • Step tracking: Wearing your watch while asleep can help you stay informed about your sleeping patterns. The display will show you how many hours of restful sleep and light sleep you were able to achieve during the night.

  • Calorie counting: On my particular model, the default screen displays the number of steps I take throughout the day along with my miles walked and calories burned.

Why should I get a smartwatch?

Though you don’t need a smartwatch to lead a healthy lifestyle, it can help you monitor your daily habits and motivate you to make necessary changes. For instance, if you notice your heart rate is a little high for your age group, you may want to try using your smartwatch’s timed breathing feature to help you relax and bring your heart rate down a few beats.

Does your friend or lover have a smartwatch? If so, you can hold each other accountable and compare steps taken, heart rate, and more. Keep in mind, the point of holding each other accountable is not to create competition, but to help you both stay encouraged to make the best choices. Think of it like this, if you wouldn’t let your phone drop below 20% then why would you let your body operate at anything less than its best? Do your body a favor and purchase an accessory that you can engage with that also helps to keep you operating at your best.

Is a smartwatch affordable?

Smartwatches can be incredibly expensive or extremely cost-effective. It all depends on the style and capabilities you’re looking for in a watch. The more features and flashiness your watch has, the higher the cost. The more simplistic your smartwatch is, the less expensive it will be. Most of them can be purchased online and in department stores.

Conclusion

While I’m normally not the type to jump on the gadget bandwagon, purchasing a smartwatch may be one of the smartest decisions I’ve made. Now, when I notice my heart rate rising, I take a few moments to center myself. If I notice I haven’t taken enough steps for the day, I go for a walk before the sun sets.

Smartwatches are great for individuals who want to do a better job of tracking their daily habits and who want to stay motivated to make healthy choices. Do you struggle with keeping promises to yourself and taking care of your physical and mental health? Try out a smartwatch and see if it empowers you to make major and beneficial life changes.
