Why do Americans have so much trouble sleeping these days? Myself included. Could it be stress? Spending too much time with our laptops and phones? Hormones? lack of sex? Or all of the above?
Whatever the reason clearly there is a problem. I’ve tried every remedy there is to offer, melatonin, CBD, meditation, relaxation apps, patches, and special sound machines. Some seem to work for a bit while others didn’t work at all. Lately while doing some research on the subject I found some interesting data that I would like to share with you all.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, our bedrooms are designed for two things, sleeping and having sex. In fact, the more we do in our beds like eating or watching tv, the less our body will recognize these rooms for sleep and the less sexy we will feel in them. That being said, can sex provide us with a better night’s sleep? According to Sleep.org
Yes. Having sex releases hormones like oxytocin and lowers cortisol levels making it easier for one to fall asleep. Also, having an orgasm produces a hormone called prolactin, which helps you feel sleepy and more relaxed. For women, sex also boosts our estrogen levels, enhancing our REM stage for a deeper night’s sleep. However, a recent study published in the archives of sexual behavior suggests that we are not getting enough of either, sleep or sex. In fact, we are having less sex now than we were in the 1990s at a rate of 9 fewer times per year.

Experts say millennials are having the least amount of sex and fewer people are in steady relationships these days. So, what if you don’t have a partner? Can masturbation provide the same benefits for sleep as with a partner?
To some degree, yes. Having an orgasm can provide a release and take the edge off leading to a more relaxed state of mind. I found countless articles in support of sex for a better night’s sleep. In conclusion, I will leave you with this very simple formula, more sex helps you sleep, and more sleep will boost your sex drive. Nighty night.
