Lingerie is meant to make us feel sexy! So why do so many people feel unattractive when rocking their sexiest looks? It’s an unfortunate truth, but many people (myself included) struggle with some serious body image issues. In fact, studies have determined that over 80% of women over-estimate their body size. Sadly, these body image issues start young. By the age of four, many children start comparing themselves to others and, by 13, over 50% of girls are significantly unhappy about their appearance. Social media feeds are flooded with images of body types that very few can attain, and merciless trolling has compounded these issues.
I think that we can all agree that it is time for a change, and while the momentum behind inclusion and self-love began to mount, Rihanna entered the scene and incited a beauty revolution. It all starting with her Fentyline of beauty products. The line has been consistently praised for changing the standards of the beauty industry by offering 50+ foundation shades, with a focus on traditionally hard-to-match skin tones by creating formulas that work for all skin types. Rihanna explains that her ultimate goal was to “create amazing products that really work, that are easy to use, and everyone can get in on.” Rihanna saw a gap in the market , filled it, and it paid off—big time—Fenty made over $558 million before its first birthday.
Rihanna’s next target, body image. Her Savage x Fenty lingerie line holds a mirror up to the world and shows us that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and encourages us to embrace and celebrate our bodies. In an interview with Vogue, Rhianna discusses the impact of her products and the Savage x Fenty Vol. 3 fashion show stating that,
“IT’S REALLY INFLUENCED THE WAY WE LOOK AT REPRESENTATION—WHICH, I THINK, IS ACTUALLY MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVEN THE COLLECTION. IT’S A FASHION SHOW, YEAH, BUT WHEN PEOPLE SEE SOMEONE LIKE THEM, THEY SUDDENLY FEEL REPRESENTED. IT BRINGS A LOT OF CONFIDENCE OUT IN SOMEONE; IT GIVES THEM A LOT OF REASSURANCE THAT THEY HAVE A SPACE IN THIS WORLD.”
She goes on to note that she is “not built like a Victoria’s Secret girl,” and she “still feels very beautiful and confident in my lingerie.” Coincidently, former Victoria’s Secret models Adriana Lima, Gigi Hadid, Behati Prinsloo were among the incredibly diverse list of models that walked the Savage x Fenty Vol. 3 fashion show. The models and performers that rocked the show embodied the inclusive and body-positive nature of line. Janay Watson, a model with vitiligo, trans model Memphis Murphy, and drag superstars Gotmilk, Shea Couleé and Symoné shred the runway looking sexy in their Savage X Fenty lingerie. The list of models and performers, which is overwhelmingly long, also includes Lizzo, Cara Devangiline, Margie Plus, Raisa Flowers, Tabria Majors, and Willow Smith all strutted their stuff down the runway. Age didn’t stop anyone from bringing the house down either, Demi Moore(58), Eryka Badu(50) and Cindy Crawford(55) reminded us that age ain’t nothin’ but a number! The fashion show also featured the stunning Miss 5th Ave and Lauren Wasser, stunning models and amputees, proving that sexy is not what you have, its how you WORK it!

Listen, it’s easy to talk the talk, but walking the walk is not always easy. It’s about changing out point of view. That dress may have felt too big last week but today, After last nights pizza and champagne dinner, it won’t even zip—and that’s ok! Bodies change, despite the lengths we go through to prevent it, if you’re living, you’re changing. In an interview with Vogue, Rhianna said it best;
“I ACTUALLY HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF A FLUCTUATING BODY TYPE, WHERE ONE DAY I CAN LITERALLY FIT INTO SOMETHING THAT IS BODYCON, AND THEN THE NEXT DAY—THE NEXT WEEK—I NEED SOMETHING OVERSIZE; I NEED A LITTLE CROP HERE AND A HIGH-WAIST THERE TO HIDE THAT PART, YOU KNOW?” SHE SAID. “I REALLY PAY ATTENTION EVERY DAY WHEN I GO INTO THE CLOSET ABOUT WHAT’S WORKING FOR MY BODY THAT MORNING. I FEEL LIKE THAT’S HOW EVERYONE SHOULD GO AFTER FASHION, BECAUSE IT’S AN INDIVIDUAL THING. AND THEN, IF YOU TAKE IT FURTHER, IT’S LIKE: WHAT WEEK ARE YOU HAVING? YOU HAVING A SKINNY WEEK? YOU HAVING A FAT WEEK? ARE WE DOING ARMS THIS WEEK? WE DOING LEGS THIS WEEK? WE DOING OVERSIZE?”
While this whole article is intended to prove that life and sexuality is NOT about numbers, bra size or otherwise, it must be acknowledged that the valuation equity of Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty line soared to over $1 billion and that valuation is likely to continue that ascension—and we are here for it! She clearly wasn’t only talking about clothes when she asked “We doing oversized?’
